Blending Western aesthetics with Eastern design.

We sat down with Alice to delve into the inspirations behind the collection, her creative process, and how her love for chinoiserie, bamboo, and
antique design elements came to life in six stunning handmade wool rugs. From her fond memories of life in Hong Kong and Vietnam to
the challenges of refining her vision, Alice shares the stories that shaped the designs.

How would you describe the collection?

I would say that my collection for LAYERED is an eclectic and playful mix of colourful rugs that have been directly inspired by my time spent living in Southeast Asia, namely Hong Kong and Vietnam. The patterns and themes are centred around my love for all things chinoiserie and bamboo, this kind of East-meets-West combination of Southeast Asian design details with English heritage style.

What are the key themes and standout elements?

A key theme running through the collection is Bamboo, a material I have always been slightly obsessed by - I have sourced and worked with a lot of bamboo and faux bamboo chippendale-style furniture and decorative pieces. The bamboo silhouette has been quite literally woven into two of our designs - one as a lovely border, and the other as a more abstract pattern. I have also taken inspiration from my beloved antique Chinese daybed from our bedroom at home, which has been reimagined as a border on the “Indochine” rugs.

Can you tell us more about the design process?

Designing my own rug collection has always been a dream, so when the opportunity to collaborate with LAYERED arose, I couldn't let it pass. I’ve long admired their exceptional collections, commitment to quality, and their ability to offer accessible price points. Working closely with their design team was an incredibly rewarding experience. Together, we refined my ideas into a cohesive capsule collection that captures the essence of my style, blending South-East Asian influences with English heritage. Throughout the process, I’ve gained invaluable insights into weaving techniques and the importance of texture in design, as it can be just as impactful as color. Visiting their Stockholm headquarters felt like stepping into a world of endless possibilities, where I could explore colors, materials, and finishes firsthand, bringing the collection to life in the most tactile and beautiful way.

What influenced your design?

I have a lovely memory of walking my dogs over the top of Sunset Peak (a mountain in Hong Kong) and as you descend, you weave past this magical ancient Chinese house that sits on the water - literally like something out of Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon. The tea house is surrounded by bamboo forests, and the way the light shone through the bamboo shoots always mesmerised me. I used to think how amazing it would be to design a print or pattern based on this abstract and beautiful scene from nature.

How have you worked with the colour combinations?

This was probably the area I spent the longest on, once the designs and patterns had taken shape. I am a big fan of using colour in my interiors, and always try to encourage my clients to be brave, honestly you never regret it! That being said, there must be careful consideration when using stronger colours so that they don’t feel too dominating, and selecting the perfect supporting colours or tones to support the star of the show is often where the magic happens.

In what homes do you see these rugs?

I’m thrilled with the end result of this collection, having journeyed from moodboards to final samples to create rugs that feel both elegant and playful, bold yet calm. While the designs make strong use of color, they remain versatile and practical. My guiding principle was to avoid creating anything “too cool” or overly arty; if I couldn’t envision how or where to use a rug in my own home or design projects, it simply didn’t make the cut. I believe there’s truly a rug for everyone in this collection—some are subtle, others bold, but all feature interesting, harmonious color combinations. From the calm simplicity of Indochine to the versatile Bamboo Stripe, which could work anywhere, I’m confident these pieces will bring character and warmth to any space.
